Abortion Laws today
In the Republic of Ireland, abortion is legal in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and later on grounds of disability, or for the health and life of the mother. Abortion services started in January 2019, after the Health (regulation of pregnancy act) of 2018. Abortion was legalized in Ireland after a referendum and vote in May 2018. At present there continue to be further attempts to liberalize the abortion law.
How and where vigils began
Vigils started in Dublin prior to the 2018 referendum outside abortion abortion referral facility, that referred abortions to the United Kingdom. A missionary priest travelled to Ireland, suggesting starting prayer vigils which then started in Cork and Galway.
