INDEX ISSUE # 2Africa says NO

There is a vast gulf between perception and reality of abortion in Africa. Western nations fund to the tune of millions of dollars projects and programs the public largely have no knowledge about. The reality of abortion in Africa is often ugly even for pro-abortion standards: over-the-counter pills with little medical information. Abortion has been imposed as a form of cultural imperialism from the West and not from grassroots African organizations.
Most African nations are largely pro-life. When they speak up, the truth about abortion in Africa can be heard, and they are ready to defend and restore their culture of life. Abortion is largely illegal in Nigeria. There are little or no crisis pregnancy centres, no social security. Churches are some of the few places that genuinely help the poor.
The documentary *Strings Attached* (available on Amazon Prime) helps to unearth the truth about Western funding and the terms and conditions they come with. In Uganda, it is not unusual to turn up the radio in the operating room so patients awaiting their turn can’t hear the screaming and crying that occurs when illegally aborted babies are flushed into a pit latrine of open sewage. Desire Kirabo, a former MSI clinic staffer, testified about how illegal abortions were dumped in open sewers.
In 2018, Marie Stopes International (now MSI Choices) provided 4.8 million abortions in 37 countries, the majority with pills in pharmacies. Only 20% are provided in a healthcare facility.
Out-of-clinic abortion services are illegal in most of the countries in which MSI Choices operates, for example, in India. But they provided 2.3 million abortions in India in 2018.
However, Marie Stopes is supported by the British Government, Department for International Development (DFID), which granted £48,173,000 in 2018. So in essence, the British taxpayer is involved in funding overseas abortions, often illegal ones. DFID previously committed over £1 billion towards funding abortions and contraceptives (which are abortifacient) in African countries.
Instead of funding clean water, education, healthcare, and authentic development, Western nations have obsessed for decades about the sacrifice of innocent children in Africa. On January 28, 2021, in one of his first actions as President, Joe Biden rescinded the law which stopped NGOs from receiving US Government funding to provide abortions or campaign for abortion.
